ADAS in Trucks Today

In the trucking industry, two companies provide the vast amount of Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) integration – Detroit Assurance and Bendix. Each of these implementations is comprised of several systems to improve safety and support drivers including, but not limited to the following:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Lane Centering
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Blind Spot Warning

These systems work together to support the driver in a variety of ways from helping to maintain speed and following distance to helping maintain lane position and alerting drivers of other vehicles in their blind spots. When lateral and longitudinal control systems work together, they are referred to as “Level 2” automation. These systems require the driver to maintain awareness of the road and traffic conditions as well as hands on the steering wheel. They are not intended to replace a vigilant driver, but to augment their abilities to increase safety. Companies often bundle these technologies together under proprietary labels (Figure 1).  The underlying technology will be discussed below for two of the primary manufacturers: Detroit Assurance and Bendix.

Specific details about these systems are based on information, guidance, and testing of these systems currently available. In the ever-evolving world of technology, specifics are likely to change. Images used are the most commonly integrated system examples to show an implementation of an ADAS feature and may not reflect all installations. Additionally, some features offer user-adjustable settings, but depending on manufacturer implementation and fleet managerial protocols, the level of adjustment or availability of feature sets may differ. Please refer to the supplied user manual for your truck and the associated ADAS suite of technologies for specific details about the systems.

Choose Your System

Detroit Assurance and Bendix ADAS features currently dominate the Class 8 truck market.

Detroit Assurance currently offers two versions of their ADAS suite – ABA5 and ABA6. As ABA6 represents the newer evolution of many of features, those advances are noted where appropriate; however, the underlying technologies largely remain conceptually unchanged from ABA5 to ABA6. In addition to these ADAS features, additional standalone ADAS technologies such as Traffic Sign Display, Tailgate Warning, and Front Guard Alert are discussed.

Similar to Detroit Assurance, Bendix offers two versions of their ADAS suite: Wingman Advanced and Wingman Fusion. The two systems are presented separately as not only has their nomenclature changed, but large differences are noted in the more advanced Fusion suite. In addition to these ADAS features, additional standalone ADAS technologies such as Following Distance Alerts, Overspeed Alerts, and Blindspotter are discussed.

The table below provides the underlying ADAS technology and the nomenclature that Detroit Assurance and Bendix use for each of those features.
